Carbide Ceramics have a high thermal conductivity and are resistant against abrasion, corrosion and high temperatures. By combining different carbides, it is also possible to adapt the properties of the material to different applications and thus achieve for example a defined electrical conductivity or a high hardness. The application fields of carbide ceramics are mechanical, chemical, space and power engineering.
Three different types of carbides were measured by LFA to determine the thermal conductivity.
The uranium derivative (UC) shows a considerable low value of around 25 W/mK which is almost constant over the temperature range. Zirconium carbide (ZrC) shows an increasing trend, whereas silicon carbide (SiC) shows a decreasing thermal conductivity which approaches to a constant value at higher temperatures.
